AISI 204CU is an austenitic stainless steel that is also known under the designations 1.4597, BS 3111, UNS S20430 and X8CrMnCuNB17-8-3. The material is a substitute for AISI 304 (1.4301) / AISI 304L (1.4307) and differs from these steels in that it has a higher copper content of 2.0 - 3.5 % and an increased manganese content of 6.5 - 9.0 % with a reduced nickel content (<3.0%). Stainless steel 204Cu has a tensile strength of 560 to 780 N/mm², a hardness of ≤ 245 HB and a density of 7.8 kg/dm³. The material can be used for welding and is non-magnetic. The material is well suited for cold forming and is characterised by good resistance to corrosion and stress cracks. Stainless steel 204Cu (1.4597, BS 3111, X8CrMnCuNB17-8-3) is used in a variety of industrial sectors, including the automotive industry, the electronics industry, the food industry and industrial chemistry.

Stainless steel AISI 204Cu (1.4597, 3111, X8CrMnCuNB17-8-3) has good weldability and can be used with many common welding methods such as TIG welding and MIG welding. It can also be used for arc welding. After welding, the material should be cooled in the air.
Heat treatment and hot forming
Solution heat treatment (cooling in air): 1000-1100 °C

Corrosion resistance
The austenitic stainless steel AISI 204Cu (1.4597, X8CrMnCuNB17-8-3) has good corrosion resistance, which is essentially comparable to that of stainless steel 1.4301 (AISI 304). The material is resistant to intergranular corrosion, weathering and stress corrosion cracking.

This stainless steel is typically used in the chemical industry, where the material is used to manufacture containers, pipes and fittings, for example. In the pharmaceutical and food industries, this material is used for plant components. In environmental technology, stainless steel 1.4597 is used, among other things, in wastewater treatment plants and biogas plants. In energy and power plant technology, this steel is used in thermal power plants, geothermal plants and in flue gas desulphurisation plants.
