AISI 304Cu/302HQ | 1.4567 | 394S17 | X3CrNiCu18-9 | Austenitic steel

Data sheet according to DIN EN 10088-3 for material number 1.4567

Austenitic chromium-nickel steel AISI 304CU is also known under the designations AISI 302HQ, 1.4567, BS 394S17 and X3CrNiCu18-9. The properties of this stainless steel grade include excellent corrosion resistance (except to salt water), which is characterised by a PREN value of approximately 17.0 to 20.7. AISI 304CU / AISI 302HQ stainless steel has a tensile strength of 450 to 650 N/mm² and a hardness of ≤ 215 HB. The density of the material is around 7.9 kg/dm³ (at 20 °C). The material has average mechanical properties. It differs from the otherwise similar material AISI 304 / 1.4301 in its copper content of 3–4%, which makes stainless steel 304Cu ideal for cold forming. The material is also suitable for cold upsetting and rolling and offers good forging and welding properties, but poor machinability. It can be used at low temperatures as well as at temperatures of up to 350 °C. Like many austenitic stainless steels, 304Cu (394S17, 1.4567) is non-magnetic (amagnetic - μr ≤ 1.3) and exhibits only very weak magnetisability. The material has good polishing properties (bright polishing is possible) and is also well suited for grinding and brushing. Applications include the automotive industry and the manufacture of screws.

Stainless steel AISI 304CU (1.4567, X3CrNiCu18-9) has good weldability and can be used with many common welding processes such as TIG welding and MIG welding. It can also be used for arc welding, but this should be carried out with appropriate welding parameters to avoid overheating and distortion. To reduce tension and maintain the mechanical properties, the material should be allowed to cool in the air after welding. No heat treatment is required.

Forgeability

Stainless steel AISI 304CU (BS 394S17, 1.4567) has good weldability and can be used with many common welding processes such as TIG welding and MIG welding. It can also be used for arc welding, but this should be carried out with appropriate welding parameters to avoid overheating and distortion. To reduce tension and maintain mechanical properties, the material should be cooled in air after welding. No heat treatment is required.

Heat treatment and hot forming

Solution annealing (+AT) (cooling with air or water): 1000-1100 °C
Hot forming (cooling with air): 1200-900 °C

Machinability

AISI 304CU (1.4567) stainless steel is generally machinable, but this material hardens during machining. Therefore, care must be taken to select a sufficient cutting depth. In addition, suitable tools and coolants should be used to prevent overheating and extend tool life.

Corrosion resistance

Austenitic stainless steel 304CU (1.4567) has very good corrosion resistance to natural environmental influences such as rain and humidity. However, the material can be susceptible to pitting corrosion at high chloride concentrations, e.g. in swimming pools. In addition, stainless steel 304Cu/302 HQ is susceptible to intergranular corrosion when welded, especially if it is not sufficiently heat treated. In contact with salt water (sea water), pitting corrosion may occur.
